MATERIALS, FINISHES, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS:

Town and Park accepts a responsibilty to supply products that will ensure long service life. To obtain optimum performance and reliability the entire range of furniture is manufactured from materials we consider most suitable for the harsh environments within which street furniture is installed.
The following schedule provides information on finishes available for the aluminium and hardwood components of our product range, including details on maintenance and replacement parts. All non-aluminium components and fixings are manufactured from stainless steel or bronze.

ALUMINIUM

Aluminium gravity diecast, sandcast and extruded components are manufactured from the following corrosion resistant alloy grades:

Grade AC 401 (Gravity diecastings)

Grade AA 601 (Sandcastings)
Grade 6106 T6 (Extrusions)

ALUMINIUM FINISHES: Incorporating corrosion resistant aluminium eliminates the need for protective coatings to prevent metal decay. This in turn allows various unpainted alternatives to be encouraged, highlighting the considerable long-term cost benefits in eliminating the need to make good scratched or degraded paintwork.

Where painted finishes are appropiate (e.g. conforming to a colour theme or corporate image), colour selection is almost limitless with the use of *Dulux Duralloy high durability powder coat and *Protec high gloss two-pack polyurethane enamel industrial coatings, both offering excellent durability and resistance to abrasion.
All extruded aluminium seat planking is anodised to 25-microns in a clear-coat finish. Anodic coatings, through an electrolytic process, form an attractive, durable oxide layer integral to the surface of the metal, further adding to the protection provided by its natural corrosion resistance. Colour options are available, though selection is limited. Please talk to our sales staff for more information...

*For Dulux powder coat colour options go to www.duluxpowders.com.au and follow the links to 'our colour range' and 'colour selector'. *For Dulux colour options that can be matched in Protec two-pack acrylic polyurethane enamel go to www.dulux.com.au and follow the links to 'specifier'.

ALUMINIUM MAINTENANCE (FINISHES): Unpainted or *clear anodised aluminium finishes require little maintenance. Water blasting or washing down of the metalwork is necessary for aesthetic and hygienic reasons in removing accumulated food deposits and bird droppings that are to be expected in most pedestrian areas.
More frequent cleaning schedules are recommended in coastal environments to prevent salt build-up. Cleaning of anodised planking should be carried out with clean water free from chemical additives.

Powder coat and two-pack polyurethane enamels require maintenance be done on a regular basis to preserve the integrity of the finish. Dirt, grime and airborne salt deposits are capable of causing damage to the coated surface and must be regularly removed. It is recommended that cleaning be done every three months, with six months being considered the maximum interval. Particular attention again should be paid to the cleaning interval in marine or other corrosive environments.

Cleaning should be carried out using a soft non-abrasive bristle brush with a warm solution of mild detergent. Where it is necessary to remove materials such as adhesives, solvents recommended are methylated spirits, white spirits or Isopropanol. After cleaning ensure surfaces are thoroughly rinsed.
The use of bore water for cleaning is not recommended due to its mineral content which can bring about staining of the coating and may instigate long term coating failure.

ALUMINIUM REPAIRS (FINISHES): During service life, powder coat finishes may suffer mechanical damage requiring repair for aesthetic reasons. Whilst in extreme cases complete recoating may be necessary, touch-up work can often be conducted on site. Following a light scuffing of the damaged area the application of a high performance etch primer is recommended prior to the application of touch up paint. Suitable touch-ups include two-pack polyurethane enamels, acrylic lacquers and 100% acrylic emulsions.

Two-pack polyurethane enamels are re-coatable on site. If damage has exposed the base metal then the application of a high performance etch primer is recommended prior to re-coating. If the paint surface has not been penetrated then light scuffing of the damaged area is all that is required prior to touch-up.

ALUMINIUM REPLACEMENT PARTS: In the event of breakage, for example resulting from vehicle impact, replacement parts (where practicable) are available for cost effective repair. Please speak to our sales staff for more information...

TIMBER (SELECT GRADE HARDWOOD)

The timber component of our products is high durability rated, kiln-dried, select grade hardwood. Timber selection and resources however raise many important environmental issues, and in this regard Town and Park has committed itself heavily over the last few years to promoting the use of 'certified' environmentally sustainable timber sources. Ecotimber is an example of such material and is obtained from Greenpeace monitored ecoforestry programs in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Ecoforestry programs ensure that timber is obtained from forests and plantations managed to sustain their biodiversity, productivity and ecological integrity, with minimal impact upon other ecosystems and with the support and involvement of indigenous people living in the source area.

Greenpeace, and partner organisations, monitor all community ecoforestry projects to verify ecotimber being produced meets world standards for forest management certification and chain of custody certification set by the FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL (FSC). The non-profit membership-based FSC organisation founded in 1993 supports environmentally appropiate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the worlds forests. Ecoforestry programs in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands are in transition to full third-party FSC certification.

Compliance to FSC standards and principles provides credibility to genuine claims that ecotimber product comes from well managed forests. Chain of custody standards, tracking raw material from the forests through various distribution and manufacturing processes, guarantees consumer confidence in the authenticity of the material.

For Greenpeace documentation and authentication of the supply of ecotimber through Town and Park Furniture please contact our sales staff.
For further infomation on Greenpeace ecoforestry programs go to www.paradiseforest.org

Ecotimbers currently sourced by Town and Park originate in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and include TAUN (Pometia pinnata ) and KWILA* {MERBAU} (Intsia bijuga). Supplies of these timbers have been increasing, enabling us to progressively achieve our goal of phasing out the use of non-sustainable material. We anticipate continuous reliable supplies to meet all requirements will become available in the near future. For details of our procurement policy click here.

*KWILA: Kwila is a 'durability one' rated hardwood and as such it contains natural tannin oils that can leech out on initial exposure to watering and/or rainfall.  The issue needs to be addressed prior to installation in exposed situations over sensitive pavement. It is recommended that units be treated by being turned upside down (to minimise staining on the frames) and left for at least eight hours exposure to sprinkling or rainfall.

TIMBER FINISHES: Timber is generally supplied with an oil stain finish, but can be left untreated in order to allow natural weathering. For customers requiring painted finishes, colour selection is almost limitless with the use of *Dulux Weathershield gloss acrylic and *Protec two-pack polyurethane enamel coatings offering excellent durability and resistance to abrasion.

*For Dulux WEATHERSHIELD colour options go to www.dulux.com.au and follow the links to 'colour inspiration' and 'colour cards'. For Dulux colour options that can be matched in Protec two-pack acrylic polyurethane enamel go to www.duluxpowders.com.au and follow the links to 'specifier'.

TIMBER MAINTENANCE: Initial coatings of oil stain fade relatively quickly due to the denseness and closed surface character of new kiln-dried hardwood. Depending on the level of exposure re: sun and rain, a further coating will probably be required within four to six months. Subsequent oil stain applications however will be progressively more effective on the exposed surface of the timber planks as more oil will be absorbed. Planking should be lightly sanded prior to re-oiling.
In time re-staining could be undertaken at one to two year intervals, however the question of accumulating food stains and bird droppings is likely to encourage more regular re-oiling in intensive use situations. Given regular re-oiling and maintenance, an 'as new' appearance can be maintained indefinitely.
Oil staining insitu needs to be done carefully but is a relatively quick and easy process. It is important to be sure that paving is protected, as the stain will penetrate masonry surfaces. It is also necessary to wipe clean any stain runs or splashes from the metal framework of the furniture.
Untreated and unmaintained hardwood timbers will weather in time to a silver grey appearance. In the event of timber being allowed to weather and dry out excessively over a period of many years, screw fixings could loosen and require re-tightening, but this in unlikely to occur when oil-staining procedures are maintained.
Acrylic and two-pack polyurethane enamel coated timber can be cleaned with a soft non-abrasive bristle brush using a warm solution of mild detergent cleanser. Stubborn areas may require multiple applications or the use of a lightly abrasive cleaner.

TIMBER REPAIRS: Acrylic and two-pack polyurethane enamels can be applied insitu with a brush. In the case of two-pack enamels, following a light scuffing of the damaged area, it is recommended that a suitable high performance primer be applied prior to touch-up. If graffiti cannot be removed with various products available on the market then cover up is possible. Where graffiti removal from untreated timber is necessary then more rigorous sanding may be required,

TIMBER REPLACEMENT PARTS: Timber planking is unlikely to be broken even by aggressive vandalism, but occasional damage in the form of splitting or sheared pieces can be caused by vehicle impact (e.g. maintenance machinery). In these cases, planking replacements are available from Town and Park. Replacement on site is straightforward, but care should be taken when re-driving metal thread screws to ensure that countersunk screw heads are not burred causing a hazard to users.
